Tread patterns are related to grip, traction, friction, and drainage. Good tread design can protect the tire, extend its service life, and improve performance. The choice of pattern depends on the road conditions. Standard tread patterns are usually used on cement roads, gravel roads, and indoor floors. The deeper the pattern, the greater the ground contact elastic deformation, and the relative increase in rolling resistance. When encountering water-covered roads, as the driving speed increases, the water between the tread and the road surface cannot be cleared in time, forming a water film between them, which causes the tire to lift slowly or even completely leave the road. This can cause the vehicle to lose control, a situation known as "hydroplaning" in the tire industry. In harsh environments such as steel mills, logging yards, and mines, there are higher requirements for tire tread patterns.

Solid rubber tires will inevitably wear out over long-term use. Therefore, most countries in the world have clearly stipulated the limit of tire tread wear. When the tread depth is only about 1.6mm, the tire must be replaced.
