New tires have a longer braking distance than old tires??
Release Time:2021-09-06

Solid rubber tires are one of the most important parts on forklifts and the first barrier to safety. Whether the tires are suitable for your forklifts or not, their wear resistance and wet ground adhesion are two very important performance indicators. . Regarding these two performance indicators, the following two actual situations are unimaginable.

1, The new tire actually has a longer braking distance than the old tire?

This question seems very illogical. The tread pattern of the old tire has almost worn to the indicator line. How can it be possible that the braking distance is shorter than that of the new tire with a deeper tread? Some tire testing institutions have conducted special studies. The dry braking distance of the same type of used tires of 100-0km/h is about 4 meters shorter than that of new tires. The reason is actually very simple.

First of all, the depth of the tread pattern has no absolute relationship with the braking distance. The reason why used tires perform better in terms of braking distance is that the almost flat tread pattern makes the contact area between the tire and the ground become larger, which creates greater adhesion. Of course, the new tires have deeper treads and are naturally better in drainage than the old tires, and they will have better handling performance on wet roads and rainy days.

2. Should I change tires in advance for safety?

On the premise that the wear indicator line is not reached, the safety of the tire has no absolute relationship with the depth of the tread. The most important point is that when the tire is worn to a certain degree, it has a lower rolling resistance than a new tire, which can improve fuel consumption. Reduce it by about 5%. Don't underestimate this 5%. Over time, it will be a big expense.

To put it simply, the performance of the old tire is not necessarily inferior to that of the new tire before it reaches the wear indicator line and is not aging and cracks, and it can also save money. Therefore, the tire is not close to the indicator line or the tire is changed before aging. Kind of waste. Of course, if the tire is damaged or has been repaired multiple times, it is safer to replace it if there is a higher safety risk.
